Are Metal Roofs Noisy?

June 15, 2012

Are metal roofs noisy? This is a very common misconception; metal roofs are no different sound wise than any other roof.

There is a difference between a metal roof on a house and one say on a barn. If you were standing in barn with a metal roof during a rainstorm you would be able to hear the “drip and tink” of the drops as they fell. If you were in a home with a metal roof you wouldn’t hear any more noise than you hear while being in a house that has asphalt shingles. The reason being is there are things that block the sound; you have the plywood decking that the metal is attached to and then you have the attic space and insulation between the attic and the ceiling below. “A metal roof is no more noisy than a traditional roof…If you don’t hear rain today you won’t hear rain with a metal roof on.” said Michael Burdine, President of Metal Solutions, in an interview with Angie Hicks from Angie’s List.
