Will Having a Metal Roof Increase the Chance of my Home Getting Struck by Lightning?

Metal Roofs and Lightning

A metal roof will not increase the likelihood of lightning striking your home.  A metal roof has no greater chance of being hit by lightning than any other type of roof. Lightning typically targets the highest point in a given area, regardless of material. If by chance your home were hit by lightning, your metal roof would disperse the energy safely throughout. Since metal roofing isn’t ignitable or flammable, it is a low risk roofing option where severe weather is concerned, especially for lightning.

Asphalt and shingle roofs are more susceptible to lightning because when lightning hits them it causes a hot spot which can cause the roof to ignite causing a fire. Metal roofs are safer than most roofing material in the event of a lightning strike because they are not combustible.
